CultureMob: MusicFest NW

I recently accepted the Portland City Editor position for CultureMob, a website that guides folks to all the cultural hub-ub.


I wrote my first article on the upcoming Musicfest NW.

You may remember my blog entries about it last year. If not, here's some reminders:

Bad V Good Ideas @ MFNW Night # 3

Bad Idea: Drinking 3 glasses of wine before you leave your house to go to hours and hours of shows

Bad Idea: Eating 8 crackers for dinner

Bad Idea: Taking a shot of tequila when you should really being drinking a lot of water

Bad Idea: Trying to combat the wine and tequila and crackers swirling around in your stomach with 2 pieces of cheese pizza (they didn't have vegan pizza at Roseland or Dante's. To be expected, for sure, but still a tad of disappointing.), a vegan taco from a cart, and a vegan maple doughnut from Voodoo Doughnuts.

Good Idea: Running into friends at TV on the Radio Show @ the Roseland. (followed by bad idea number 3 though. I don't even like tequila that much.)


Good Idea: Catching the last of the Matt and Kim show at Backspace--they were so energetic and fun, I wish I had seen more of their set. (Anna, this picture is for you!)

Good Idea: Running into my brother on his way back from Vampire Weekend at the Crystal Ballroom.

Good Idea: Biking home and seeing Monotonix playing his set at Satyricon in a tree, without his pants. Kids were spilling into the streets, people on bikes and in cars were stopping and joining this rowdy hilarious infectious man from Tel Aviv do some wacky shit.



I had drunk ADD last night and couldn't stay in a venue too long, but that's the fun of MFNW I guess. I wandered into Berbati's about 5 times, was in the Roseland, Backspace and Satyricon, and was home in bed by 1am. Not too shabby. I did have to stop drinking by 9:30 though--Sheesh. You'd think I'd know how to pace myself by now (and eat dinner, especially after my birthday debaucle this year at Ron Tom's....)

Tonight's the last night. I'm a little sad but also definitely need the rest.

Night #2 @ the Crystal

So I know I don't have any pictures from tonight, but just wanted to give a quick update on MFNW 2008.

I headed to the Crystal Ballroom tonight for a rad show. First, I hit up Ringler's, directly underneath the Crystal. I had 2 beers and a delicious bowl--brown rice, zucchini, carrots, peppers, mushrooms, tofu, and hot sauce. It's new on their menu. I was considering taking a picture, but decided against and scarfed it down instead. Yum!

Went upstairs to see Eskimo and Sons, Calvin Johnson, and M. Ward.

Eskimo and Sons played their 2nd to last show. All young kids, and talented. The lead singer sounded like a cross between Violent Femmes and Bright Eyes when he sang, and had a distinctive lisp when he spoke.

Calvin Johnson. Oh My Gosh. I am in love. His voice--beautiful. He opened with this song about cotton and wool and a coffin. The best voice I've heard in ages. Now I know why he's called a living legend. I just need to figure out how to make him mine... to sing me awake in the morning. I'll work on it.

M. Ward. I was crossing my fingers for a guest star I loved, but didn't get any. Beautiful timeless voice. Didn't recognize many songs, and it was a pretty mellow set, but he's just great. Thankful for opportunity to see him.

Met a guy from Portsmouth named Andy. Portsmouth is about an hour and a half south of London. He's on a 2 1/2 week holiday, namely for Musicfest NW. Gave him my card, told him to come in and see me. I'm gonna make a She and Him cd for him.

Didn't take a single picture tonight. I'm sleepy (late night last night. By the way, last night was AWESOME.) Gotta wake up and do it again tomorrow.

I love Portland.

I really really really (really to the third?) want to blog about my backpacking trip with my brother this weekend, and our subsequent "fish" (beer-battered tempeh) tacos, but no time, no time!

I'm headed to MFNW 2008--Musicfest Northwest--which begins tonight and ends Saturday Night. I've got a wristband, my bike, and some champagne. I'm ready to go!

Here's what I made for a really quick dinner:

1 whole wheat tortilla
1/4 cup kalamata olive and garlic hummus
1/2 cup baby spinach
3 cremini mushrooms, sliced
1 baked Quorn patty, or 1/2 cup stir-fried Quorn pieces


Mix together, and... BAM! Deliciousness, in yo' mouth. I had this for lunch and dinner tonight.

Okay, I'm off to see The 1900's, Norfolk and Western, Longhorne Slim, and the Old 97's. Will be holed up at Berbati's tonight.
